Canasta was invented at the start of the 1940s in South America. Josefina Artayeta de Viel brought the game to New York. Canasta arrived in the USA and was further migrated to Great Britain and the European continent. In 1950 Canasta was, besides Bridge, the most popular card game.
It is a card game for two players. The aim of Canasta is to win as many points as possible. At the start of the game a points target is agreed by the two players – the first player to reach the defined target wins the game. If both players exceed the target, the player with the highest final total is the winner.
