Préférence is a card game, which is very popular in Austria and in eastern Central Europe. Its roots date back to the late 18th Century.
The game is played by three players with a deck of 32 cards in four suits: Clubs, Spades, Diamonds and Hearts or Acorns, Leaves, Bells and Hearts. The value of the cards in ascending order is as follows: 7, 8, 9, 10, Jack, Queen, King and Ace (French cards) or 7, 8, 9, 10, Unter, Ober, King and Ace (German cards). During the bidding phase the contract to be played is also decided. In most of the contracts the team must attempt to prevent the single player from taking tricks or reaching his/her goal.
